It is not just in our “modern day” that we are discouraged from speaking up and defending the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In my early days in the workforce, it was a long established “rule” that you didn’t discuss politics or religion at work, or in public spaces. These are the days when some religions considered it a grievous sin to attend services of another religion. Yet, I think that these were times of more “tolerance”. Today, in our “modern” world, I believe that we have confused “tolerance” with “indifference”. Tolerance allowed for a respect for another idea, whereas indifference does not care. Indifference divides people. The Gospel is the Good News that God calls every person into a relationship of mutual respect. The Gospels challenge the indifference toward others and their situations in life. It is a challenge to announce the Gospel of Christ.
