Fr. Matt Ellis

Before joining the team at St. Isidore as the associate pastor, Fr. Matt was at St. Therese in Shelby Twp. (2010-2016), and St. Lawrence in Utica (2016-2019). He feels blessed to join everyone at St. Isidore! Fr. Matt was born in Detroit and grew up in Livonia, making him a “west-sider.” However, having now lived 24 years in total on the east side, he considers himself “double-sider.”

Fr. Matt was schooled in our Catholic School system since 1st grade. He graduated from Detroit Catholic Central in 1978, went to the University of Detroit for college and then the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1988. He has had numerous parish assignments in the Archdiocese of Detroit since 1988. Before the ministry of the priesthood, he had several work experiences as a youth. At 13-years-old he was a private golf club summer caddy for three seasons. He has worked as an electrician’s assistant and as an all-around helper at a nursing home for two full summers. In college, Fr. Matt worked at a movie theater both full-time and part-time. As an adult, he took some time and became a pro truck driver at car-hauling using the big 75-foot tractor-trailers, loading, driving, and unloading.

Through his family’s active involvement in their parish and other Catholic institutions, Fr. Matt came to know numerous priests, which was enriching and influential in finding the priesthood a viable life option and vocational calling for him. God and the many helpful people that were sharers of life, aided his finding (warning: this may sound like Yogi Berra) ‘the best way for me to be the me God made me to be.’

Fr. Matt happily anticipates meeting you and joining in the ministry with Fr. Ron and so many of you.
