This is why we fast according to Jesus

Friday of the 22nd Week in Ordinary Time

In today gospel, the pharisees challenges Jesus as to why his disciples don’t fast. Jesus’ response implies that when he is with us, fasting becomes secondary. Having a close relationship with the bridegroom (Jesus) is the most important thing. Once the bridegroom is gone the guests will fast.
We fast to stand in solidarity with the poor and hungry and become closer to Jesus. It’s a way of looking forward to the coming of Christ; when he will bring the heavenly banquet.
