Desertification is the process of vegetation decreases or disappears in the deserts or drylands. Desertification is a process of degradation of the land.

The land mass at the southern end of the Saraha desert in Africa is the most endangered desert currently on earth. The Great Plains in the United Staes are at risk for desertification. This is due to intensive agriculture and land degradation, along with the drought of April 2024.

A few reasons for decertification are removing the natural vegetation (for example cutting too much fuel wood) and over grazing by animals. This causes soil erosion and dryness. This can also be caused by drought, climate change and improper agriculture. Thus, causing the land to turn into deserts, losing its flora and fauna.

Here are ways to restore the land and halt some of the desertification:

  • Make agriculture sustainable.
  • Protect the pollinators.
  • Restore freshwater ecosystems.
  • Renew coastal and marine areas.
  • Bring nature back to cities.
  • Generate financing for restoration.
  • Planting trees.
  • Rotating crops.
  • Using water retention techniques such as building retention ditches and cut-off drains.

The United States is supporting the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in its global efforts to reduce land degradation, increase land restoration, and build resilience to drought. We are working with the UNCCD, allies, and partners to prevent desertification, engage in reforestation, and tackle soil erosion.

It really is up to us to save God’s beautiful planet!! We helped to destroy it, now it is time to clean up our act!
