Celebrating the Feast of the Holy Family this Christmas season is an excellent time to reflect on what makes a Christian family truly special. While we all strive for the perfect family, we know that operating as one can have its challenges, just as the Holy Family of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus had.
The Holy Family was far from perfect. Mary and Joseph were exiled and faced financial hardships and the daunting task of raising Jesus. This reality teaches us that every family, regardless of its struggles or imperfections, has the potential to be holy. The emphasis should not be on achieving a flawless family life but on nurturing love, understanding, and faith amidst the challenges.
Today, Christian families come in all forms: extended, re-married, blended, and single-parent households. Each has its unique qualities and set of challenges. What unites them is not their composition but their pursuit of holiness. A holy family is one where its members love and support each other, uphold Christian values, and grow together in faith. This inclusivity reflects the essence of Christianity, where love and acceptance are paramount.
As we celebrate Christmas, let’s remember that the Holy Family, with all its human challenges, is a model for us–not because they were perfect but because they remained committed to each other and God in the face of difficulties. Every family’s unique composition and challenges are called to this same holiness. In embracing our imperfections and striving for love and unity, we honor the true spirit of a Christian family.
