Connecting Point

Connecting Point: June 4, 2023

Reflecting on this week’s Connecting Point, reminded me of a wonderful experience I was able to witness last weekend. I presided over a couple’s wedding ceremony. As a deacon, being able to receive and witness the consent of a couple as they freely choose to give the gift of themselves, is inspiring! Each person willingly gives of their entire selves to one another, irrevocably, forever. Their gift of love to each other resembles the Holy Trinity, proclaimed in our gospel message this weekend. God loved us so much, he gave his only son to redeem us and bring us back to him. That love was returned from the Father, by the Son, and from that love breathed forth the Holy Spirit, where we receive the gift of grace. We sometimes think in ways that God created, Jesus saves, and the Holy Spirit imparts grace. However, it is all three that create, redeem, and sanctify. Husband and wife mirror that activity as they come together as one, to create new life, guide each other to holiness, and help each other get to heaven. Their union is the sign of the most Holy Trinity.

As missionary disciples of Christ, we are tasked to go forth and share the good news of the gospel with others. We are tasked to break down the walls we surround ourselves with, figuratively and physically, in relationships with our fellow human beings. We start with our relationships between husband and wife, created in God’s image and likeness. Our relationships are a model of peace, harmony, and love which should characterize our life with each other as a community. This is how we can be inspired to build communion from our home, out to our world. If we have communion with God, we will have communion within our family. Then we can have communion with all others, as a people of God.

We can see what happens in our world when we take God out of our lives, schools, and community! It is broadcast on the evening news. Our lives become fragmented and we feel divided. But, if we remember the time that we are brought together in marriage, or have witnessed the absolute joy on a couple’s face as they exchange vows, we can catch the sign of trinitarian love. Love that overflowed from our creator and touched all of humanity, restoring communion with each other and our Lord.
