“Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.” John 14:21
Do me a favor and pause for a moment. Now re-read the portion of this week’s Gospel above. What word keeps showing up? “Love!” Jesus is teaching us to love and in return he promises a relationship between himself and us. So, who reminds us to love like Jesus teaches, or, whose love reminds us that Jesus is always there? A mother.
This Sunday, we celebrate Mother’s Day. We give thanks to our Holy Mother Mary for saying “yes,” and we turn to our mothers to thank them for teaching us how to love.
My wife, Bernadette, became a mother last year in May. (Yes, Noah just turned one.) Each and every day I see how she is showing him how to love and what love is. It reminds me of how my mom continues to show me. The love of a mother is a constant reminder that Jesus is always there.
Today, take a moment to thank a mother for showing us all, each and every day, what love is and that Christ is always there.
