Challenge yourself this year and go beyond the usual practice of “giving up” something. Now is a great time to take stock of your spiritual life and to grow in it. The Social Justice Committee has been putting in articles of ways to help Creation and maybe you can start by doing some of the following.
Volunteering –
If you can give a few hours a week, we have many groups at St. Isidore that would love new members and new ideas. There are also many organizations to choose from in Macomb County.
- American Red Cross – donate blood and save a life, assist in the blood draw (paper work)
- Forgotten Harvest – Forgotten Harvest has battled food insecurity by redistributing surplus food. St. Isidore’s distributes on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month.
- Meals on Wheels – deliver meals to the elderly or people that cannot get out
- Michigan Humane Society – donate food or time to an animal in need
- St. Vincent dePaul – donate food to the pantry at St. Isidore
- The Motor City Mission – they make beds and pillows out of plastic bags for the homeless.
- Volunteers Assisting the Disabled – is a non-profit organization devoted to assist adults with neuromuscular diseases in Michigan.
Write a Note to Someone
I think we all know someone that would love to hear from us. Especially the ones that are not tech savvy. Imagine them opening their mailbox and getting a letter/note telling them that you were thinking of them and not a bill.
Lent Holidays – St. Patrick’s Day, Easter or just a Thinking of you card
Help a Neighbor
I’m sure we all know someone in our neighborhood that could use an extra hand. Maybe it’s an elderly neighbor or someone that just gets a surprise because someone shoveled their walk. You may not have noticed them yet but now you can now be on the outlook.
Pray for Someone
You may have a little time in your car to pray for that person that just cut you off instead of yelling at them. Find someone every day that you feel the need to pray for. There is a lot of power in prayer. It is between you and God, and the person you prayed for will be the recipient of God’s many graces. What a great day for them!
Clean out your Closets/Basements/Garages
This could be long overdue! It may not fit, not work, be out of style but whatever the reason it needs to go. Just remember, your donation or recycling gives someone else a new treasure.
