The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated each year on August 15 This Christian Feast is primarily celebrated by Catholics, Orthodox Christians and some Anglican and Lutheran churches. This day is set aside to commemorate the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken (assumed) body and soul into heavenly glory at the end of her earthly life.
Theologically speaking, the Assumption signifies Mary’s unique role in salvation history as the mother of Jesus and her purity and sinlessness, making her a fitting vessel to be taken into heaven.
The scripture readings for this feast reflect on Mary’s unique role in our history as well as her glorious assumption into heaven.
The first reading from Revelation 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab describes the vision of the woman “clothed with the sun,” (who is often interpreted as a symbol of Mary) and her victory over the dragon which symbolizes the ultimate triumph of good over evil.
In the Responsorial Psalm 45, we sing: “The queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold.” This psalm reflects the honor and glory given to Mary as the Queen of Heaven.
The Second Reading from 1 Corinthians 15:20-27 discusses Christ’s resurrection describing Christ as the “first fruits” and those who belong to him following. It emphasizes the victory over death, which is also celebrated in Mary’s assumption.
The Gospel from Luke 1:39-56 includes the account of the Visitation, where Mary visits her expectant cousin Elizabeth and the infant John leaps for joy in her womb at the sound of Mary’s voice. The Magnificat, Mary’s song of praise to God, expresses Mary’s humility, faith, and the great things God has done for her: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”
