Being a Catechist means being able to bring the joy of the lesson about God to the children in a way that they can understand the meaning and remember it for years to come. Sometimes you need to read the chapter yourself before you can teach about it. With the supplies that we provide for you, anyone should be able to come up with a way to present the lesson without having to read from the book.
We look for adults who are alive in the faith themselves and want to use their talents to share the message with children. Sometimes, this means we make phone calls to parents. Although this is a very old school concept in this case it’s the best way to find out more about someone.
I remember when I used to prepare for lessons with the first graders. I would read through the binder lesson plan, then go over the actual pages in the book. It probably took me about a half hour to come up with a complete lesson. Of course, sometimes it might take longer like when I was recently planning for an 8th grade session as a substitute. After I reviewed the videos I felt there was a better way to present the lesson for the day and ended up with a great game to play and still get the message through to the teens.
It all depends on your commitment to the Lord in helping him to retell his words and mission to our children.
