The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are unique skills and abilities given by the Spirit. They are given to faithful followers of Jesus, followers to serve God for the common benefit of his people. A list of spiritual gifts found in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 mentions wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues. Comparable gifts are mentioned in Ephesians 4:7-13, Isaiah 11:2-3 and Romans 12:3-8. The Gifts of the Spirit are simply God empowering faithful Christians to do what he has called us to do. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are part of “everything we need” to accomplish his plan for our lives.
All of the gifts of the Holy Spirit are supernatural gifts. They come from God to us for designated tasks and purposes. When we shine a light into a reflector, it looks like a light is inside it. But it isn’t. A reflector only reflects what is shone to it. We are GOD’S reflectors. We reflect the glory of God. You are the vessel through which the gifts flow. The gifts aren’t ours; they’re God’s. God uses whom he chooses. The gift is never an end in itself, it is only a means to an end. The end is ministry, touching people for the Lord. We are only the channels through which the Holy Spirit flows. The most important key is to have an intimate relationship with your best friend, the Holy Spirit. We flow with the Spirit, and he flows through us. We yield our body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit, to him. God wants to use you.
St. Paul instructed: “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us …let [us] use [them] in proportion to [our] faith,” Romans 12:6
