Our first reading this weekend gives us the Church’s answer to the Gospel’s question about what belongs to God and what belongs to Caesar. All the power that the Persian ruler Cyrus holds comes from God. Just so with Caesar. What does he really have; and what do we really have, that does not come first from God? The question is a contradiction, because everything belongs to God.
Let us pray today for the grace to remember this when we are faced with questions about where our true allegiance lies.
