Interview with Family of Parishes (FOP) Youth Minister, Diana Devine Diana started as our YTH Youth Minister last November
Tell me something about your beliefs. I really believe that the youth are the current church and without them there won’t be a continuation. The more that youth are given responsibilities in the church, ( just because your young doesn’t mean you can’t do something) the more they will feel included and want to be more present.
What is an upcoming goal you have for the FOP youth? We are currently planning a worship night in December. All the teens across the diocese will be invited. There will be a speaker/musician that will be coming. It is all very exciting and this event just started in action today!
How would you describe your call to the youth ministry? I’ve been involved in youth ministry for over 12 years. It is a big part of who I am. In 2017 I attended my first mission trip as a camper on a youth mission trip, where I later transitioned into the role of a chaperone. In 2022 I spent the summer working for the same mission trip, this time as a staff member responsible for coordinating activities like stage performances, skits, and engaging with the kids. It was an incredible experience, and I knew helping kids grow in their faith was my true calling. During most of 2022 and 2023, I dedicated myself to discerning my calling, which ultimately led me to a job posting for Disciples Unleashed FoP. The moment I saw it, I knew I had to apply. Two weeks later, I interviewed for the position, got the job, and felt certain that this is where I’m meant to be.
Who are your spiritual role models? St. Dymphna is my favorite saint. She is the Patron saint of mental health and anxiety. I pray to St. Dymphna all the time. I feel that dealing with anxiety is very important for today’s youth. My grandma is my other role model. She lost a lot (both of her children and her partner) yet she never lost her faith. This inspires me.
What is your approach to evangelism. I like to understand where the youth group is and then build off it. I feel it is important to know where kids are first so that they can make a connection to faith easier. Sharing my story and involvement in the church shows the youth where I come from. I enjoy introducing the many sides of faith to them that they may not have seen—even though they may have come been to church many times.
If you had 3 words to describe yourself, what would they be? Kindness, understanding, and empathy. You can also say I’m fun and exciting!
What would be a message that you would want to share with the youth? There is no wrong way to pray, there are so many ways! It’s okay if you don’t pray the same as others—just pray!
