How often do we not recognize Jesus?

The Road to Emmaus story appears in Luke 24:13-35. It recounts an encounter between two disciples of Jesus who were traveling from Jerusalem to Emmaus on the day of Jesus’ resurrection, although they did not yet realize that he had risen. As they walked, they discussed the events surrounding Jesus’ crucifixion and the reports of his resurrection.

Suddenly, Jesus himself approached and began walking with them, but they did not recognize him. He asked them what they were discussing, and they explained their sadness over the crucifixion of Jesus and their confusion about reports of his resurrection. Jesus then interpreted the Scriptures for them, explaining how the Messiah had to suffer before entering his glory.

Upon reaching Emmaus, the disciples invited Jesus to stay with them, and as they shared a meal, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. It was in this moment that their eyes were opened, and they recognized Jesus. However, he disappeared from their sight.

How often do we not recognize Jesus in the people we cross paths with each day… In the events of our lives… In the beauty and wonder of creation… In the breaking of the bread at Mass… His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.
