During this month of October, we are introducing a new (to us) musical setting of the Ordinaries, the Mass of Saint Ann by composer Ed Bolduc. The Ordinaries are the prayers during Mass that do not change from week to week, including the Gloria, Sanctus, Mystery of Faith, Great Amen and the Lamb of God.
The Mass of Saint Ann is already sung by the other churches in our Family of Parishes, St. Therese and St. Francis/St. Maximillian. As a means of solidarity, learning this setting will help us develop a common repertoire with our sister parishes in anticipation of future Family of Parishes liturgies celebrated together. This vibrant, contemporary setting was also recently suggested to us by our guest presider, Fr. Joe Dailey.
We will be taking a few minutes prior to Masses the first few weeks of October to teach and review each acclamation. Repetition breeds familiarity so be patient with yourself (and us!) if you don’t get the melody right away. As in any new endeavor, it may take a dozen weeks for most to become comfortable with this fresh new arrangement.
Whenever we learn new music for Mass, it is also good to be reminded that we are all called to full participation in the liturgy, listening, responding, saying prayers and singing together. Even when you might think your voice is not good enough, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Our full collaboration in liturgy represents our unfettered trust in Lord working in and through us together during Mass. Whether your voice is good or not so good, when we offer our voices to God, the sound of all voices in chorus together is so much greater and more powerful. Don’t be afraid to sing… you just might help the person near you have the courage to do so as well. Be the spark that ignites the fire of prayer and praise.
